Software Quality As A Distinction

Quality As A Characteristic

In my yesterday’s blog, I talked about Software Quality as a value. That’s the approach when your product has comparable other products in the market, and when you want to assess the Software Quality of your product in comparison with those products.

When your product has no comparison, a pioneer product, or has a characteristic that no other product possesses, or won’t possess easily, then you have what is called a ‘distinctive attribute’ or a ‘characteristic’. This is another way of looking at Quality. You could call it as a ‘niche’ too, because the customer is looking at your product as of unique value that is not provided by any other – the key thing being no one else would be able to duplicate it.

What are the attributes that you can think for such a product? I can’t think of many because these days anything and everything can be duplicated!

But I do realize the challenge in assessing the Quality of such a software product.

  • You won’t have any precedence to check against
  • The product will be enjoying the patronage of the customers who would not be skeptical about the product and look for improvements
  • As no one is pushing for improvements, there won’t be innovation
  • Software Testing of such a product is going to be tough, as there are no industry standards or comparable products to refer to

But, maybe, there’s no improvement or innovation needed. And that’s what makes it that product of great ‘Quality’. A quality of distinction, a unique characteristic. Like a unique symphony which is lauded by many, in spite of many symphonies being present.

What are your thoughts on such a product? Feel free to comment below.
