IoT Testing

IoT Testing and its importance

2022 had been an important year for IoT. Shipping companies started introducing IoT for the shipping containers to track them. Even before, there were also other applications of the IoT devices like temperature sensors that went with the shipments for the safety and security of the products shipped. In this blog, we will talk about IoT Testing and its importance.

A recent story about a drug bust in a ship owned by a famous shipping company narrated how temperature sensors helped. The people who helped in smuggling the drug opened the containers, inserted the drug bricks along with other shipments like dry fruits, wine, and other merchandise while the ship was on the move, using speed boats. If the act had been done while the ship was in a port, it could have been easily detected, but it was done when the ship was on the move, the officials had to track several things. When they came to know about the temperature variations in the containers while the ship was on the move, they figured that the containers had been opened at those times, and then they seized the ship when it arrived at a port!

Safety and security are enabled by digital transformation equipment like IoT. Many transportation companies use computer vision to monitor valuables like jewelry when they are safely kept in boxes and cameras monitoring them. If there’s a state change like a movement, the sensors immediately report that to the concerned personnel for further action.

There are several things that need be tested with an IoT solution depending on the context. Typical IoT Test Strategies would include front-end, connectivity, and sensor functionality, along with design considerations like performance and security. It needs a customized touch to come up with a strategy for IoT testing. If your organisation needs help with IoT testing strategy, feel free to contact me, and let’s talk.
